Melbourne gets lucky on Friday the 13th! New York DJ Jonathan Toubin / New York Night Train is bringing the world’s most popular and prolific soul party to town for one sweat-drenched night only! The party Time Out says is “widely acknowledged as the mother of all soul jams,” New York Night Train SOUL CLAP & DANCE-OFF, hits The Gasometer Hotel Friday, November 13, 2015!

The evening kicks off with a blazing live set by one of Toubin’s favorite contemporary bands, Sydney’s Straight Arrows followed by all night dancing to the DJ’s world-famous original 1960s soul 45s! The centerpiece and intermission of the dance party is the $100 contest! Toubin moves over to the mic, Melbourne’s own Woody McDoanld (3RRR) takes over the DJ booth, and contestants get numbers safety-pinned to their backs and have at it. Winners will determined by a judge panel consisting of members of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Jarrad Brown & Ella Thompson (Dorsal Fins), Gabi Barton (The Town Bikes) and Mohair Slim (PBS). Then the lights go back down for more getting down until the bitter end!

Jonathan Toubin, who Vice Magazine proclaims is “the only DJ we actually like” and Rolling Stone says is “the most liked man in the soul music scene,” was voted “Best DJ” in last year’s Village Voice “Best of NYC Readers’ Poll” by playing literally no hits or fashionable new genre - but rather cutting together raw, wild, and uncommon sides by unsung artists on the original 45s for the contemporary dance floor. In over 2000 gigs in the last nine years, Toubin has gone where no soul DJ has gone before - tirelessly hitting hundreds of nightclubs on five continents and, in recent years, dozens of major music festivals - everywhere from All Tomorrows Parties (five times) to Bonnaroo to Australia’s own Sydney Festival. His Soul Clap and Dance-Off is the only party to get an entire night dedicated to it at Austin’s South By Southwest (where it has been the official closing party four times) and the only dance party to get its own night at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night’s Swing. Not only was Toubin the first 45 DJ with Burger Records cassette compilations, but he’s also the first living DJ with compilations on the legendary Norton Records - with four “Souvenirs of the Soul Clap” LPs released internationally in the last year.
