The Body Electric featured the songwriting skills of one of Australia’s finest Charlie Marshall along with an all star lineup of musicians including Jim White and Warren Ellis from the Dirty Three, Brian Hooper from the Beasts of Bourbon and Darren Seltmann of The Avalanches.
‘Won’t Give Up’ is a retrospective album from Charlie Marshall and the Body Electric due for release in January 2016 on Red Ted thru Rocket Distribution – a compilation of songs from the band’s first two albums along with unreleased tracks from the first ever recording session.
Charlie Marshall founded the legendary Melbourne blues punk band Harem Scarem in the 1980’s. With The Body Electric in the 90s he combined this bluesy, soulful, rock rhythmic sense with a songwriting craft inspired by the likes of Brian Wilson, J Mascis and Jimmy Webb and vocal style somewhere between Dylan, Iggy and Leonard Cohen to create a unique sound.
The band attracted some of Melbourne’s finest and most creative musicians - Warren Ellis, Jim White (Dirty Three) and Brian Hooper (Beasts of Bourbon) formed the first Body Electric lineup. Darren Seltmann (The Avalanches) and Bryan Colechin (Hugo Race True Spirit) recorded the second album. The great success of the Dirty Three and then the Avalanches took them off overseas and meant the Body Electric songs from this period never received the sustained exposure they deserved, but that is about to change as Charlie Marshall and the Body Electric relaunch these ‘lost Australian classics’ with the ‘Won’t give up’ compilation LP.
