Every Wednesday in January, POPPONGENE brings her brand of devotional dream-pop to the Gaso upstairs. The solo project of artist and musician Sophie Treloar (also of Melbourne outfit Sunbeam Sound Machine) POPPONGENE’s music is laconic and hypnotic, sun-soaked and lush, recalling the rainforests that surround her Belgrave home, and the beaches of her native Byron Bay.
Debut single “Do It Girl” is self-affirming and aspirational, described by 3RRR’s Simon Winkler as an “absorbing psychedelic adventure”. Along with its heavy-lidded B-side “Belgravey”, these are the first tastes of POPPONGENE’s upcoming EP, to be released in 2017. To usher in the new year, POPPONGENE and her band will soundtrack midsummer Wednesday nights, accompanied each week by a host of Melbourne’s finest friends, including label-mates 808s and Greatest Hits and Melbourne mainstays Great Outdoors, all equipped to turn the Gaso into an upstairs oasis.
